It is not even the end of the first week of May, but the increasing intensity of heat in Chandigarh with no immediate sign of abating meant that the residents have to sweat it out for some time. The maximum temperature on Sunday was 40 degree Celsius, a tad lower than 40.6 degree recorded on Saturday, which was a departure of 3.1 degree Celsius from normal.
Weathermen have cautioned that in the coming days, since there is no immediate respite expected due to the absence of western disturbance or any formation, the temperatures may go up leaving citizens sweating in the scorching heat. This prediction has prompted the Chandigarh Administration to issue a heatwave advisory on Sunday.
“ Since there is no western disturbance approaching and no formation that we can foresee, the temperatures are expected to rise up,” a senior official at the Chandigarh meteorological department said.
According to the details by the meteorological department, on this day last year (May 5), the maximum temperature recorded was just 31.5 degree Celsius, while that recorded on May 6, was 33.1 degree Celsius. Similarly, in 2022, the maximum temperature recorded on May 5 was 33.3 degree Celsius, while that on May 6 was 36.3 degree Celsius.
However this year, the temperature has already crossed the 40 degree-mark from May 4.
On May 3, the UT saw maximum temperature of 36 degree Celsius, while on May 2 and May 1, it was was 34.6 degree Celsius and 30.9 degree Celsius respectively. On April 30, the maximum temperature in Chandigarh was 35 degree Celsius.
The minimum temperature has also shot up and was about five degrees more than seen in the last few days – 23.0 degree Celsius on Saturday and 22.2 degree Celsius on Sunday morning.
On Monday and Tuesday, the maximum temperature is predicted to be in the range of 39 to 40 degree Celsius again and the minimum temperature in 23 to 24 degree Celsius, according to the weathermen.
