Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said Government would be flexible with Fijians earning below the $15,000 threshold seeking free legal services in areas of family, criminal and civil law.

“We are flexible with that income threshold to those of you who may be in circumstances beyond your control,” Mr Bainimarama said.

He made these statements for low income earning Fijians who have dependents such as cousins and aunts.

“Or if you are in some sort of financial bind, my Government will work to cater for your needs,” Mr Bainimarama said.

He added that this was part of their agenda of ensuring that all Fijians were equally represented in every aspect of the community.

“That agenda has catered for those who are most vulnerable in Fiji, protecting those historically on the margins of society and bringing them to the fold of our national life and prosperity,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“Our commitment to expanding access to legal services is a critical part of that mission to build a more caring and inclusive Fiji.”

In addition, Government allocated $8.4 million to the Legal Aid Commission at the beginning of this financial year.

“I am proud to say that low-income earners in Fiji have more opportunity than ever to seek legal advice and enjoy the security, assurance and full protection of the law.

Mr Bainimarama said: “over 40,000 Fijians have been assisted by the Commission throughout Fiji, last year.”
